The Transformative Power of Mindfulness

Today, Keith will share his story of his own transformation and how the power of mindfulness helped him heal from a debilitating injury and turn his life around. Keith will speak with participants about the power of mindfulness in their lives; how to be a YES to the things that they want to see in their lives and use this skill to create a life they love. Keith will also discuss the power of mindfulness to change and strengthen the body, expand the mind and grow the capacity for love.

Keith Mitchell played as a linebacker in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars and was named to the Pro Bowl. His NFL career ended when he had a paralyzing injury in a game. Keith found the practice of yoga to help him regain functionality. Yoga helped him move again, and it opened his mind, body and soul to so much more. His goal is to bring the transformational power of yoga & meditation to a wider audience, including athletes and men, through his passion, knowledge, story and unique yoga approach.

A nationally-recognized culinary translator and expert on the role of foods in supporting optimal health, Rebecca has a Masters of Science degree in Health and Nutrition Education, and received her culinary training from New York’s Natural Gourmet Institute of Health and Culinary Arts. James S. Gordon, MD is a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma, and is the Founder and Director of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine. Dr. Gordon is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at Georgetown Medical School, and he served as Chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy.

Dr. Ferdinando Mannello’s topic is “Personal Care Products and Breast Cancer.” He will tell us what we need to know about how to manage and avoid toxicity found in products we use every day. The more we know, the safer we can be.

Dr. Mannello received the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences cum laude in 1982, and is Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Urbino in Italy. His main expertise is the breast physiopathology, focused on biomolecular factors involved in cancer initiation. He is author of 160 peer-reviewed full-length scientific papers and two books.

Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life

Brian Wansink is the John S. Dyson Professor of Marketing, Director of the Food and Brand Lab and Co-Director of the Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs, all at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He is best known for his work on consumer behavior and food and for popularizing terms such as “mindless eating” and “health halos.” His research has focused on how micro- environments influence what and how much people eat and how much they enjoy it. At the conference, he will talk to us about mindless eating (something that most of us are guilty of!) and how we can make changes in our lives to control it.

Brian is the author of over 100 academic articles and books, including Marketing Nutrition (2005), Slim by Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life and his best-selling book Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think. He is a 2007 recipient of the humorous Ig Nobel Prize and was named ABC World News Person of the Week on January 4, 2008. Since 2006, Wansink has written a monthly column on food behavior for MSNBC entitled Chew on This. In July 2007 he joined Prevention.com as one of their two nutrition columnists, writing the column Food Think with Wansink.

Alicia H. Clark a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, specializes in relationships and anxiety, and helping people cope with stressors ranging from the mundane to the extremes of modern life. She has longstanding interests in anxiety and emotional regulation, and endeavors to help people understand the broader impacts of anxiety and depression on different life stages, as well as how interpersonal relationship patterns can substantially affect these experiences. Her current areas of interest include harnessing the productive power of anxiety, the commodity of attention, and the critical role of empathy and emotional expression in relationships.

She has also been published in the areas of trauma, alcohol and adult development, and has spoken at international Women’s Leadership conferences on Anxiety, Life Transitions, and Wellness. As an Assistant Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, she teaches Advanced Psychopathology and Advanced Practicum to doctoral candidates at the Washington, D.C. campus.


Charles De Santis

Charles De Santis serves as Associate Vice President for benefits and payroll and Chief Benefits Officer for Georgetown University. DeSantis is also responsible for the implementation and success of GUWellness: Mind, Body, Soul, the University’s non-traditional, broad-based wellness program for faculty and staff. DeSantis developed an arts education program for university-bound high school age AIDS orphans in the heart of the Kibera Slum, the largest slum in the continent of Africa on the edge of Nairobi, Kenya.
