Achieving Optimal Health conference

The third annual Achieving Optimal Health conference was a big success again this year.

As always, we begin with mindfulness and this year Keith Mitchell, former NFL linebacker who suffered a spinal cord injury, kicked us off. He spoke of the healing powers of yoga and meditation and the idea that if you are open to it, life changing transitions can bring you liberation, joy, and inspiration.

We then heard from Rebecca Katz, bestselling cookbook author, who walked us through a delicious kale recipe. She emphasized that foods can be healing and taste good at the same time.

Dr. James S. Gordon spoke to us about mind, mood and food.

New this year was Julien Williams, a certified personal trainer, who got everyone moovin and groovin. He was a big hit.

Dr. Ferdinando Mannello gave us a clinical look into personal care products and breast cancer. He came all the way from Italy for the AOHC!!

This was our first year to have a panel discussion led by Tricia who is BB&R’s in-house Oprah!! She led a conversation about anxiety, sleep and nutrition with Dr. Tracy Freeman, BB&R’s Chief Medical Advisor, Alicia H. Clark, a licensed Clinical Psychologist, and Rebecca Katz. It was fast moving and informative and got rave reviews.

Our entertainment came in the afternoon with Dr. Brian Wansink from Cornell University who spoke about the mysteries of why we unconsciously eat more than we think. And A. J. Jacobs, NYT’s bestselling author of many hilarious books, including Drop, Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection!

The highlights this year:

  • GREAT MUSIC AND PRODUCTION PROVIDED BY PRG
  • MANY NEW VENDORS PROVIDING HEALTHY FOOD AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS
  • NEW ATTENDEES FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE
  • BEAUTIFUL OCTOBER WEATHER
  • VIBRANT, UPBEAT ENERGY IN THE ROOM
  • LOTS OF INTEREST IN NEXT YEAR’S CONFERENCE

FAQs

  • I know the conference is on Georgetown campus, but where exactly?

The conference will take place in the Edward B. Bunn Auditorium located in the Intercultural Center on the Georgetown Campus. If you are walking or taking a taxi please use the 37th and O entrance. The Edward B. Bunn Auditorium will be to your right after you enter the campus.

  • If I am driving, where can I park?

Limited parking will be available on a first come first served basis at the Southwest Garage (map). Due to a number of events taking place on Saturday around the Georgetown University campus, we expect significant traffic congestion in the area surrounding 37th and O Streets. We strongly suggest taking public transportation or ride-sharing services to the conference if possible. The best place for ride-sharing drop-off is at the Library Steps, 37th and N Streets, or at Prospect and 37th Streets, NW.
Beginning at 7 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Saturday, parking and access on the west side of Georgetown University will be restricted. Vehicular traffic on 37th Street, NW will only be allowed to travel south between P and N Street, NW. There will be no vehicular access to O Street between 37th and 35th Streets, or access to 36th Street, between P Street and N Streets. Traffic control officers will be in the area to navigate vehicles.
